A Man of Great Worth (Prov. 31:3)

Many ancient kings—including ones found in the Bible—as well as wealthy men today, are notorious for having many women. In many cultures, especially where polygamy is normative, wealthy men seem to have a need to have many women or wives. The more money they have, the more women they tend to acquire. Nevertheless, the Bible states in Psalms 111:10: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; a good understanding have all those who do His commandments. His praise endures forever.”

The verse above, in Proverbs 31:3, warns men against giving their virility, vitality, and energy to many women. First, this practice goes directly against God’s ideal at creation, which states in Genesis 2:24: “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” Second, a king—or any man—with many wives or concubines will have his strength, wealth, energy and ability to rule or live an honest and ethical life compromised.

A man who fears and honors God and wants to leave a great legacy for his children to follow will give his strength and devotion to one woman. Strive to be this type of man. A man of great worth.
