"So it was, as they were burying a man, that suddenly they spied a band of raiders; and they put the man in the tomb of Elisha; and when the man was let down and touched the bones of Elisha, he revived and stood on his feet." 2 Kings 13:21
The armed bands of the Moabites walked from summit to summit. They moved like hungry greyhounds, looking for prey. Israel suffered the miseries that the rebellious and disobedient receive as a result of their estrangement from God. Israel was playing with divine grace. When pain came, they sought God; but after the trials passed, they turned to the idols. Not even the powerful ministries of Elijah and Elisha had been able to promote a complete reformation in this two-faced people. With one face they served the Lord, while with the other they worshipped the Baals on the heights. But now, armed bands of Moabites walked along those peaks, bringing destruction into their hands.
In the abandoned fields of Israel, men were about to bury a corpse when they were surprised by one of these enemy gangs. In today’s verse, we read what happened, including the amazing resurrection. Miracle! Miracle like no other! Never in biblical history do we find another miracle like it.
Did the contact of the dead body with the bones of the prophet Elisha bring the poor condemned man back to life? It is what our eyes would see and our mind deduces. But the message God wanted to give to the people was that, even though the enemy and armed bands were approaching, if the God of Israel could bring a corpse back to life, He was also able to defend them.
There is no enemy so powerful that can nullify the Lord's action. And we too can be spiritually resurrected by being in contact with the Word of God, which was shared by prophets who have passed away and to the extent that the divine Spirit breathes in it.
