“Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son." Genesis 18:14
The years marched by like a weary army, but the promise escaped from his wrinkled hands. He was looking for it in the torn carob tree of the road, in the ravine, in the outline of a hill. He held out his hand trying to grab it, to take hold of it, but he only experienced the sensation that he was growing old day by day.
He forgot that God had said to him, "At the appointed time I will return to you." There is a time appointed by God for everything. It is not our time. It is God's time. The promise that Abraham and Sarah would have a son was still in place. God does not forget His promises. But He knows the best time for its fulfillment. We do not. Abraham did not. We are so impatient that sometimes we have to pay the price for our haste, which is failure.
However, even human failure is not the end of dreams, just one more step in the direction of promise. Abraham, the father of faith, walked a long path to learn trust. Faith does not develop only when things go your way. In the apparent silence of God when it seems that He has forgotten His promises, it is there that faith is exercised and grows until it becomes a way of life.
The angel asked the patriarch, "Is anything too hard for the Lord?" From a human point of view, a ninety-year-old woman would not be able to conceive. But human impossibility is divine opportunity.
Didn't Jesus raise the dead, make a paralytic walk, heal lepers, and open the eyes of the blind? What is there in your life that He cannot do? You need to be patient, for "at the appointed time" He will return to you, and then you will see the divine miracle.
