THE IMPACT OF THE LAW BOOK

“Now all the people gathered together as one man in the open square that was in front of the Water Gate; and they told Ezra the scribe to bring the Book of the Law of Moses, which the Lord had commanded Israel." Nehemiah 8:1

The sun shone very bright on that morning of blue skies. It was a holiday. Hearts leaped with joy and gratitude that the walls of the city had just been rebuilt. The people were happy. The seventh month of the Jewish calendar had arrived. This month was important to the Israelites because it included several feasts, such as the Feast of Trumpets, the Day of Atonement, and the Feast of Booths. On the latter, also called the Feast of Tabernacles, the people gathered in the marketplace, as one man, to read the book of the law. This was the reason the people were gathered after the rebuilding of the walls.

They were just following God's instructions. Moses had told them in the book of Deuteronomy that during the Feast of Tabernacles, they were to gather together to read God's law. The reading of God's law did not refer only to the Ten Commandments but to the holy books, basically those of Moses called the Torah.

This historical incident in Israel's life teaches us that when things are going well, as was the case in Israel after the walls were rebuilt, it is necessary to read and remember God's teachings. Amid the hubbub, we may forget the instructions God has given us, and consequently we may fare badly.

Rejoicing and the spirit of gratitude should always be united with the spirit of learning and worship. We always learn in every circumstance. And we worship constantly because every moment of life is a divine miracle.
