“Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements? Surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it?" Job 38:4-5
On that morning, it had the same wildflower scent I breathe now; I lay back in the silence and solitude of the old town where I was born and gazed at the skies and the green countryside that stretched out before my eyes. I felt more human than ever yet more tiny, insignificant, and finite. The greatness of heaven subdued me and led me to understand the questions that God asked Job and that we have just read.
The smallness of the human being in the face of divine greatness is abysmal, and yet the poor creature often dares to defy the Creator. The English mathematician and philosopher Bertrand Russell once said, “Science can teach us [..] no longer to look around for imaginary supporters, no longer to invent allies in the sky."
You may feel like you do not need heavenly help with a full table and health flowing through your veins, but where do you go when need knocks on your door, or medical science says there is no remedy for your disease? It is better not to question the existence of God. You were not present when His creative power set the boundaries of the world, when He told the sea how far its waters could go, or the swallow where it should go during the winter.
You and I were not even dust. We did not exist; how can the mortal creature answer the existential questions asked by an immortal God? But how good it is for God who, despite our rebelliousness, continues to love us and wait for us with open arms.
Take Action
As you read God's questions to Job, do not think that He asked them to forbid Him to think. In fact, if you look at them you will notice that thinking is just what He wanted you to do. Meditate on life, on what happens to you, and on what God allows, but without forgetting that He has a broader vision of all this than you do.
