JACOB'S LADDER

"Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it." Genesis 28: 12

A sad, nostalgic night was bathed in tears because of the pain of knowing that he was evil. Jacob was going through the most dramatic moment of his life. He had deceived his father and brother and was fleeing for his life. Esau wanted to kill him, and Jacob was on his way to a distant land. The hammer of guilt struck him relentlessly. The birthright attained by deception was of no avail to him. He glided his body along the lonely path, like a madman, overwhelmed by the thought of being part of the darkness. Why does the sinner often believe that the only way out is to flee?

Tired from walking, he rested, using a stone as a pillow. It was a starry night, but there was no light for him. He looked ahead and saw only shadows of uncertainty. He was a sad pilgrim of life, the perfect symbol of human beings who drag themselves in search of a security and peace that they hardly believe is possible.

What Jacob did not know was that while man, drawn by sin, often forsakes God, but the Lord never forsakes the sinner. The weight of guilt may convince you that you are alone, but it is not true. God manifested Himself to Jacob that night through a dream. He saw a ladder with one end on the ground and the other touching the sky.

From heaven he heard God’s voice confirming the promise made to his father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Although he had seemingly ruined everything, God was able to restore it. Nothing is irreversible for those who believe in the wonderful grace of Jesus.

Take Action
