"Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, βHe is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.ββ Psalm 91: 1,2
It is not possible to define who wrote this psalm. Some attribute it to Moses and others believe that the author was David. The truth is that whoever composed it, wrote one of the most extraordinary pieces of poetry in the Bible. Not only because of the elegance of the wording and the eloquent use of literary figures but mainly because of the message, which expresses man's trust in God despite the dangers that surround him and the threats that terrorize him.
The Psalm begins by presenting God as a hiding place where the creature takes refuge from their enemies. A kind of abode in which they can live without fear. It is not a physical place of worship that we call a temple but of God Himself. The psalmist's idea is to show life with God as a genuine experience of fellowship and shared joy with Him.
Human beings were created to live this experience. From the very beginning, God's plan was for Adam and Eve to learn to walk with Him and to live with Him and in Him. Unfortunately, sin caused separation between the Creator and the creature. Human beings turned away from God and chose their own path of destruction and death, and then their troubles began.
From that day on, we have been on a pilgrimage through the arid desert of a world plagued by contradictions. There is pain, death, betrayal, violence, and injustice everywhere we go. The world we live in is not our home. Our real home is the shelter of God, the shadow of the Most High. He is our protective shield. We should never have gotten out of there. At the same time, it is never too late to go back.
Take Action
Dedicate this day to reflection. Do not be intimidated by the challenges life throws at you. Do not fear the destructive action of your enemies. Lift your eyes to heaven and throw yourself into the arms of the almighty God. Sing "In the Shelter of the Most High" (if possible, with your family).
