"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; a good understanding have all those who do His commandments. His praise endures forever." Psalm 111: 10
Summer is ending in Portland, and the sky is crying the first rains of the long winter that will end only in March of next year. Also crying is the family of Isidoro, a Mexican who crossed the border and, when he was taken to prison, took his own life. "Better to die than to see my dreams turned to sand," he wrote on a piece of used paper before killing himself.
Isidoro's mother, an old woman full of gray hair, suffers in silence and stammers: "He needed wisdom; he always lacked wisdom." I do not know what that distraught mother meant, but today's verse refers to wisdom as the result of following God's counsel. The Lord's teachings are the way that leads to the desired land. Human beings want to be happy. They struggle, they work, and they strive to be happy. They travel infinite distances, cross borders, take risks, and eventually grow old and conclude that happiness is out of reach.
However, the Bible categorically states that happiness exists, but it is not found by chance. You have to look for it in the right way. Happiness is not the absence of problems. This world is full of difficulties. Living happily is the art of managing problems wisely and coming out victorious.
Human beings greatest need is for wisdom. That is why, in this psalm, the Lord emphasizes the fact that it is necessary to seek Him to find the good understanding that tells you when to go forward or when to stop. The hard blows of life taught the psalmist this secret, and that is why he finishes by saying, "His praise endures forever."
