“I will lift up my eyes to the hills—from whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth." Psalm 121:1,2
Psalm 121 was sung as the Israelite pilgrims made their way to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover. Before reaching the holy city, they passed along a dangerous path surrounded by mountains and infested with wild beasts, evildoers, and venomous vermin. In those mountains the idolaters offered sacrifices to their gods; they believed that help, in the difficult moments of life, came from those mountains. On the other hand, the psalmist raises his eyes to the mountains, but when he wonders where his help would come from, he understands that it can only come from God.
Throughout the ages, man has been inclined to turn his eyes to created things— the stars, the waters, the pyramids, the crystals—and not to the Creator. Millions and millions of euros are spent on consultations related to human theories that base their predictions on earthly and palpable objects. In the psalmist's day, things were no different.
Timely help for God's children comes from the heavens, which is beyond the mountains and the stars. The Lord is constantly attentive to the needs of His children, but He cannot intervene without human permission.
What is the crisis that haunts your days and nights? Which way is the wind blowing that threatens your fragile boat? Fear not!
