GUARD YOUR HEART

“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it." Proverbs 4: 23

The human heart is deceptive. It deceives, confuses, and can lead to death. I am not referring to the physical heart that pumps blood to the body, but to the figure that is often used to illustrate the control center of thoughts and feelings. We say, for example, "I love you with all my heart," but we actually love with our minds. Therefore, when Solomon advises that we should "guard our hearts," he is talking about the inner essence of human beings—our thoughts, feelings, desires, will, and decisions. Solomon states that a person is what their heart is.

The enemy of souls knows that in the human heart lies the control of actions, and to take possession of the whole being, he concentrates his efforts on taking its heart. “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he” (Proverbs 23:7), says the wise man, referring to the relationship between what humans think and do.

According to the World Health Organization, an average of nineteen million people die each year due to heart problems. The amazing thing is that, just as there are diseases and disorders that affect the physical heart, there are also evils that ruin the spiritual heart and destroy life. Atherosclerosis, for example, is the hardening of the arteries due to the buildup of cholesterol plaques on the walls of the artery. But the hardening of the spiritual heart is also a reality. It occurs when, confronted with the Truth, we refuse to accept it.

That is why it is necessary to reflect. How is the health of our spiritual heart? The doctor is Jesus. It is urgent to seek Him all day long and contemplate His face through meditation, allowing the oil of the Holy Spirit to run through our spiritual veins and cleansing them to be sensitive to His voice.

Take Action

If you give your whole heart to God, your mind will be both wiser and simpler. You will not have bending or twisting. It will be more difficult for obsessive thoughts to torment you and peace will reign instead. Sing "Guard Your Heart" (if possible, with your family).
