ADMONITION AGAINST ADULTERY

"Can one walk on hot coals, and his feet not be seared? So is he who goes in to his neighbor’s wife; whoever touches her shall not be innocent." Proverbs 6:28,29

Frank and Julia were a seemingly ideal and happy couple—young, handsome, and prosperous. They married in their early thirties, dreaming of a blissful home. They dedicated love, sacrifice, and self-denial so that their marriage would last "till death do us part." But life is difficult, and the choices we make are sometimes foolish and self-destructive. Frank and Julia did not know that they would encounter an unpleasant surprise along the way.

One night I was woken up by Frank's phone call. He was desolate, his voice torn with pain, and he was unable to say anything coherent. Julia had left their home and returned to her parents' house. What could have happened? The young husband had had an affair with another woman, and Julia had found out.

This is not something exclusive to Frank, or to men. The characters depicted in this drama could be called Mary, Peter, Rose, or Robert. I constantly find homes torn apart, dreams shattered, and castles destroyed by a minute of craziness.

To walk in the paths of marital infidelity, according to Solomon, is to "walk on hot coals," and the sad result is that the feet of the unfaithful are burned. In Frank's case, it was not only his feet that burned but also his conscience, his heart, and his whole being. He suffered, cried, and begged me for help.

"Whoever touches her shall not be innocent," warns the wise Solomon. His conclusion is that the consequences will come as surely as night comes, even if the day has been bright. The sentence of this biblical author refers not only to a possible separation but also to the scars that remain even after the eventual reconciliation. Because wrong actions leave horrible marks that disturb the peace of the soul.

Take Action

Passions have their moment in life, but do not let a moment of extemporaneous passion ruin your entire life. Ask God to fill you with love and help you be a faithful spouse.
