“Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going." Ecclesiastes 9:10
The brevity of our existence in this world comes with the responsibility to get things done promptly and efficiently; "do it with your might," Solomon advises. This is a warning against inertia and unproductivity. "Do it" is imperative. It does not depend on the circumstances nor on your goodwill. Life passes and the hours fade into the immensity of eternity. There is no time to waste. Live sensibly. Do what comes to your hands to do but according to your strength. Do not try to go beyond what you can, but do not stay behind where you could have gone.
The English writer Mary Cholmondelay wrote: "Every day that I live I become more convinced that our life is wasted because of the love we do not give, of the strength we do not use, and in the selfish fear that risks nothing and that leads us to live dodging suffering without knowing that we are actually avoiding happiness."
According to the biblical writer, death is the end of everything for the human beings on this Earth. Beyond death lies nothingness, emptiness, nonexistence. "There is no work, or device, or knowledge or wisdom." Your chance is now. Today is the day. Yesterday is gone, tomorrow has not yet come. So, do what needs to be done today.
British explorer and entrepreneur Cecil Rhodes said before he died, "There is so much to do, and I did so little..." He, however, had done a lot—not all of it good, truth be told. He was, for example, responsible for the marketing of 90% of the world's diamonds; and yet, at the moment of his death, he thought that very little had come to pass.
"Whatever your hands find to do, do it with your might. Make your work pleasant with songs of praise" (Ellen G. White, In Heavenly Places, p. 226).
Take Action
Today is a new day. Get up without laziness, and allow God to use you for the blessing of others. Sing "Do It with Your Might" (if possible, with your family).
