“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame scorch you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior; I gave Egypt for your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba in your place.” Isaiah 43: 2,3
The divine promise is clear and straightforward. He does not say "if one day you pass through the fire." The searing tongues of burning flames are not a possibility but a reality. The text states, "when you walk through the fire." It is unavoidable. As we travel the dangerous paths of this life, we will encounter trials. Pain and adversity will be our daily bread. Since sin entered the world, we live in a place condemned to a slow and constant death.
That is why the divine promise does not say "when you walk on a carpeted path full of comfort," but rather it speaks of uncomfortable "waters," "rivers," and "fire." The storm will come, but you will remain firm as a rock. The hurricane will sweep away whatever is in its path, but you will resist like the palm tree that bends but does not break.
Life is full of obstacles that come in varied shapes and sizes. Sometimes they are turbulent waters, sometimes they are mighty rivers, and sometimes they are scorching fire; but in the midst of all that, the Lord will be with you and will save you.
Take Action
Look around you today, what are the rivers, waters, and fire that threaten you? Do not be afraid, do not run away, and do not hide. Face the battles, while being confident that you are not alone. Your God knows no defeat. Hold on to His powerful arm and your enemies will desist. Sing “When You Pass through the Waters” (if possible, with your family).
