«Can a woman forget her nursing child, and not have compassion on the son of her womb? Surely they may forget, yet I will not forget you. See, I have inscribed you on the palms of My hands; your walls are continually before Me.» Isaiah 49:15, 16
Despite occasional stories of mothers who commit atrocities against their children, the vast majority of mothers love their children with an endearing love. Hence God himself uses maternal love as an illustration of His love for the human race. What mother would be able to forget the son she gave birth to? That is what the Lord asks, and He Himself answers that, even if a mother did this, He will never forget His children.
The text presents a reason: “See, I have inscribed you on the palms of my hands.” This wonderful figure is fulfilled in the wounds caused by the nails in Jesus’s hands. Once resurrected, Jesus told Thomas to look at the palms of his hands (see John 20:27).
Looking at the nail marks on his palms, we can see how Jesus has us inscribed in them. Our redemption cost him blood. The Lord was not an unbalanced suicidal person with a desire to die. His love for life was so great that on the last night, in Gethsemane, he prayed to his Father saying, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me” (Matthew 26:39). He was God in the flesh. As a human, he possessed the self-preservation instinct that rejects death; but in his case it was more decisive to feel the perspective of separation from the Father. Yet he willingly accepted death because it was necessary to save us.
You and I were condemned, but He loved us so much that He agreed to be nailed to a humiliating cross in order to give us back the right to life, which we had lost.
With such great love, how could God forget about you?
