“Can the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard its spots? Then may you also do good who are accustomed to do evil.” Jeremiah 13: 23
In November 2014, thirty-two-year-old Nicholas Mevoli entered the water and began diving toward Dean's Blue Hole, an underwater cave located in the Bahamas. Mevoli's goal was to reach a depth of more than seventy meters and do so without breathing. But the adventure ended in tragedy.
This sad incident raises a question: How long can you stay underwater without coming to the surface? How long can you last without breathing? Free divers, those who dive to the limit of their ability without scuba gear, typically last three minutes underwater. The record-holding diver, Herbert Nitch, stayed below the surface for four and a half minutes.
Now, I challenge you. Submerge your head under water and remain without breathing for half an hour. It is impossible. An impossibility is something that cannot be done. It is unfeasible; there is no one capable of achieving it. The same thing happens in our spiritual life. It is impossible for a bad man to become good by his self-discipline or by any kind of human effort.
This is the reason Jeremiah raises his questions that are collected in today's verse. The categorical answer is no. Absolutely no. The only solution to the human problem is Christ.
Only He is capable of making old things new. "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new” (2 Corinthians 5:17).
Take Action
Go to Jesus today, surrender your life completely to Him, confess your inability, and plead for His power. Will you do it? Only you can answer it.
