"I will take you as My people, and I will be your God. Then you shall know that I am the Lord your God who brings you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians." Exodus 6:7
Moses fell on his knees before Jehovah's presence and let the wings of his heart take silent flight in reverent devotion to the God of his fathers. He had accepted the divine call to free his people, but he was aware that the road to freedom would be barren, without water or shade. Dry sand roads, inhabited by solitary jackals and fiery snakes.
The worst, perhaps, was not the difficulties of the dying land, but the dryness of the slave souls, for whom he had to restore the dream of freedom. How do you sow aspirations in the heart of a slave? More than four centuries had passed since Jacob's descendants arrived in Egypt. The present generation looked like an old tree, whose stripped bark laid bare its moist flesh and its heart devoid of freshness.
In this context, God repeats to Moses twice in succession the expression: "I will take you as my people and I will be your God." Nothing generates so much security in the troubled soul as a sense of belonging. You are not a wandering star, roaming in the universe. You are a beloved child of God. He is with you and will not abandon you.
The Lord always wanted to be a part of your life. He never tires of searching for you until he finds you, even if it is in a barren, dry and lifeless place, to give you back the freedom you lost and give you a future of peace and happiness.
