"Then King Nebuchadnezzar was astonished; and he rose in haste and spoke, saying to his counselors, ‘Did we not cast three men bound into the midst of the fire?’ They answered and said to the king, ‘True, O king.’ ‘Look!’ he answered, ‘I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire; and they are not hurt, and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.’” Daniel 3: 24,25
The tongues of fire burned seven times hotter than usual. Outrageous and terrifying flares. The ropes that bound the hands of the three young Hebrews turned to ashes; but the brave, unharmed sons of God moved back and forth as if they were strolling through a carefully manicured garden.
Nebuchadnezzar, the Babylonian king, looked at the scene in horror and perceived that there was a fourth person whose face was like "the Son of God." That character was the Lord Jesus Christ Himself, whom Daniel in his book later identifies as Michael. The Lord never abandons His children and is present in good times or bad.
This is a true story, yet it is also a prophecy that foreshadows a religious persecution that will take place in the time of the end. Men and women who are faithful to God and obedient to His Word, like Daniel, will be persecuted because of their faithfulness and will be accused of disobeying the laws of men.
But God's faithful remnant need not fear, for “at that time Michael shall stand up, the great prince who stands watch over the sons of your people; and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation, even to that time. And at that time your people shall be delivered, every one who is found written in the book” (Daniel 12:1).
