DANIEL AND THE LIONS

“Then Daniel said to the king, ‘O king, live forever! My God sent His angel and shut the lions’ mouths, so that they have not hurt me, because I was found innocent before Him; and also, O king, I have done no wrong before you.’” Daniel 6: 21,22

The king's face is obscured by two deep dark circles. He has not slept. The outlook suffocates him. It is as if he has a plastic bag covering his head, preventing him from breathing. Babylon has fallen. Now the dominant power is the Medo-Persian Empire, ruled by Darius, a personal friend of Daniel who he considers one of his best advisors.

But the satraps deceived the monarch. Cunningly, they plotted to have Daniel condemned to die in the lions' den. Humanly, there was no solution, and God’s prophet was thrown to the hungry beasts, which had not been fed for days.

The lions gathered around Daniel. The prophet closed his eyes, put his life in God's hands, and the angel of the Lord closed the mouths of the hungry animals. The Almighty defends His children in the greatest adversity. Not a hair falls without Him knowing. His watchful eyes are at all times attentive to their need.

Are there hungry lions looking to devour you right now? In your professional, financial, or family life, do you feel that the beasts are approaching, threatening you? Trust God. His promise is faithful and true. He has promised that “the angel of the Lord encamps all around those who fear Him, and delivers them" (Psalm 34:7).
