«Surely the Lord God does nothing, unless He reveals His secret to His servants the prophets.» Amos 3:7
God does not keep secrets. He reveals Himself. He communicates. He does not hide; He does not ignore your pain and your sorrows. In Eden He spoke to Adam and Eve face to face, but once sin came, humans could no longer stand the presence of God, they fled and hid.
Centuries after the fall of our first parents, at Sinai, God appeared to the people desiring to communicate with them, but the Israelites asked Moses for God to stop speaking to them because they were afraid. They pleaded that whatever the Lord had to say to them, He would tell Moses. From then on, the Lord had to choose faithful people so He could convey His message to humanity. The Bible calls such people prophets.
Who is a prophet, in the biblical sense? The Hebrew word is nabi, which literally refers to someone called by God to speak on His behalf. The prophet’s job is to teach, warn, admonish, and foretell. Their message has to do with the past, the present, and the future. They announce what God reveals to them.
Amos spoke of the coming judgment on Israel so that the people would have a chance to repent. A few believed, but most did not heed God’s warnings. The same is true today. The nations are on their way to their own destruction, and God warns through Bible prophecies what is soon to happen, but most of humankind is unaware of it.
