BETHLEHEM, HOUSE OF BREAD

“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of you shall come forth to Me the One to be Ruler in Israel, whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting.” Micah 5: 2

Born in a city whose name means "House of Bread," Jesus is the Bread of Life that descended from heaven to satisfy the spiritual hunger of hopeless beings who ran after pleasures in order to fill the emptiness of their desperate hearts.

In Old Testament times, Bethlehem was known as David's hometown. In spite of that, it was no more than an insignificant city, without beauty or relevance. In truth, it was "little among the thousands of Judah." However, God chose it to be the birthplace of the world's Redeemer.

Referring to this Messiah, we see in today's verse that Micah traces his origins back to the beginning of time... The reality is that the Son of God was not born in Bethlehem. He was never born. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. From the beginning, Jesus was already present. There was never a time when He did not exist.

For this reason, when we look at the cross of Calvary and see God made Him a Man to die for the sinful race, when we see Him resurrected and victorious over death, and when we accept Him into our hearts, our finite humanity becomes eternal in Him. We remember that we were not created for death but for life, and that death is an intruder in the human experience because our Redeemer lives forever, from eternity to eternity.

He is the Christ of all time, who, being the Prince of the universe, became a helpless child and was born in an insignificant city called Bethlehem.
