«In that day it shall be said to Jerusalem: ‘Do not fear; Zion, let not your hands be weak. The Lord your God in your midst, the Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.’» Zephaniah 3: 16,17
Verse 16 begins by saying, “In that day.” What time are they referring to? It speaks of a future time, but Zephaniah wrote in the days of Josiah, the reforming king. The scrolls of the law had been discovered, and a spirit of revival had taken hold of the people.
The waves of evil spread rapidly, but when the Spirit of God works, the waves of good also spread with extraordinary speed. A person’s positive testimony is contagious, and that was what happened in Zephaniah’s day.
Faced with this marvelous picture, the prophet invites his people not to fear. The enemy is not happy when the people react positively to the work of the Holy Spirit and he does everything possible to ruin the spiritual environment. But in God the people can keep their joy.
There is no need to lower our arms when voices are raised against the revival of God’s children, there is no need to weaken our hands, there is no room for fear, and the reason is simple: God Himself is in control, He is in the midst of His children and He will save them.
However, God’s action goes beyond protective care for His children. He delights, rejoices, exults, and sings.
Close your eyes for a moment and imagine God singing. There can be no more sublime and glorious moment than to see the Lord singing melodies of joy as He sees His children walking in His ways.
