«Now learn this parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is near. So you also, when you see all these things, know that it is near—at the doors!» Matthew 24:32, 33
Matthew chapter 24 records the signs of Christ’s second coming, mentioned by Christ himself. At first, they are signs of the destruction of the temple by the Romans, but by extension they also refer to the end of the world. Shortly before Jesus’s return, there will be wars and rumors of wars, earthquakes, hurricanes, frequent weather disasters, uncontrollable epidemics that will decimate millions of people, and so on. These disasters are not the end, but only the preamble to the climactic event of the planet, the triumphant second coming of Jesus to take His redeemed with Him.
Although there is talk of tragedies, audacious deceptions, and violence, Jesus’s purpose is not to describe the chaotic situation of the world before His return, but to invite His children to prepare to go with Him to the kingdom of Heaven. That is why He tells them to watch and learn from the fig tree. When the branches grew tender and the figs sprouted after winter, every observer of that region knew that summer was approaching. This is also what we Christians must do. As we look at what is happening in our day, we should know that the coming of Christ is at hand.
There is no more time for spiritual inertia or indifference. There is no room for indecision. The world is falling apart. There is moral decay everywhere. Climate researchers point to a tragic future looming like a runaway colt. Today is the time for preparation. Are you and your loved ones ready?
