«Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.» Mark 10:43-45
There is a lot of misunderstanding about the desire to grow and prosper. Some consider that Christians should not aspire to positions of leadership and that in order to follow in the footsteps of the Master, they should limit themselves to always being a subordinate, since the kingdom of God is not to be found in this world. But the Lord Jesus Himself exhorted His disciples, telling them that whoever wants to become great should be willing to serve. He did not say that none of His disciples should aspire to a position of leadership. Christ did not come to annul in the human heart the desire to grow. He came to teach us the right way to reach leadership: through a path of service.
Christ’s life was a life of service. He was born, lived, and died serving, and today millions around the world follow Him. They would be able to lay down their lives for Him. What a pity that human beings choose the wrong path to grow! Betrayal, lies, falsehood, and intrigue are paths that can lead you to power but not to leadership.
To be a leader you need to be admired, loved, and listened to. If you are simply heard and obeyed, but not loved, you are not a leader but a dictator. There are countless petty dictators in the world who are convinced that they are leaders.
If you are an employee of any institution, do not feel sinful for aspiring to a better position. That feeling is legitimate. And maybe God put it in your heart. However, remember the way Jesus taught you: serve, serve, and serve.
Take Action
Let others admire and trust you, but only if you reflect Jesus and His spirit of service. Let Him guide your life and lead you to green pastures and calm waters. You can be a blessing to those who work alongside you. This is God’s plan for you! Do you accept it? Sing “He Came to Serve” (if possible, with your family).
