«Then they drew near to the village where they were going, and He indicated that He would have gone farther. But they constrained Him, saying, ‘Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent.’ And He went in to stay with them.» Luke 24: 28,29
Two men were walking sadly in the direction of Emmaus. They had left Jerusalem that afternoon after the most dramatic experience of their lives. Jesus, whom they considered the Messiah who would deliver Israel, had died crucified, and their expectations and aspirations had been buried with Him.
The men were walking in the gloom of the evening, brooding, and bowed, when suddenly a pilgrim joined them. The strange wayfarer asked them the reason for their sadness, and so a conversation began between them about the recent events in Jerusalem. That man told them about Jesus, told them that it was necessary for everything to happen the way it had in order for the Scriptures to be fulfilled.
Arriving at Emmaus, a village located two and a half hours away from Jerusalem, the pilgrim made a pretense of not stopping, but they encouraged him to stay with them, to which He agreed.
That pilgrim was Jesus. They realized it when they were about to bless the food and saw the wounds of the nails in His hands. They tried to say something, but He disappeared.
Even today it is getting late, and the day has already declined. Wars, pandemics, and cataclysms announce that night is coming. It is no longer time to remain indifferent. It is time to invite Jesus to stay with us. He is always ready to accept the invitation of His sincere children.
