THE TEN COMMANDMENTS

"And God spoke all these words, saying: ‘I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.’” Exodus 20: 1,2

The early morning was cold. The man God called to free His people from the bondage of Egypt climbed the steep mountain alone to the top. There, amid clouds of smoke, roar, and lightning, God gave Moses the ten eternal principles of His holy law, written on tablets of stone with His own finger.

God is love and takes pleasure in protecting His children. There is no one better than parents to understand the meaning of the word “protection.” You can often see parents looking out for their young children who are running around without caring about the danger that lurks in front of them. They head to the edge of the abyss, toward the road, or to the edge of the roof of a twenty-story building. For them there is no danger, they are not aware of the risk.

Then the parents, to help the children they love, make a pact: "Son, not here", "It is dangerous over there", "You can only play on this field", and "Do not cross the street without looking both ways.” The same is true between God and human beings. Driven by our instincts, we only run in the direction of the abyss of life; but God, who loves us, established His law to show us the safe way and spare us pain and suffering.

God's commandments consist of loving instructions for our protection. They are not requirements for salvation. For this reason, before writing the eternal principles of His law on tablets of stone, God reminded His people that He was the One who had rescued them from slavery. You are already saved by grace alone. But, now that you are saved, live as a saved person, and walk in His ways.

Take Action

Do you know the Ten Commandments? It is a good thing that this is the case. However, it is even better that its principles spring from your heart, as the fruit of the Spirit who wants to dwell in you. Sing "The Ten Commandments" (if possible, with your family).
