"And Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.’" John 6: 35
The crowd perceived that morning that Jesus had withdrawn to the other side of the sea and decided to look for Him even if it took time. Men, women, and children set out for Capernaum to meet the Master. The day before, by the Sea of Tiberias, something unprecedented had happened. Jesus had fed a crowd with just two loaves of bread and five fish. Extraordinary! Many thought that if Jesus was the Messiah, it would be wonderful. With such a leader, they would never go hungry or be in need.
When they met Jesus that morning, they began a theological discussion. They wanted to know what evidence Jesus had to claim that He was the Son of God. The conversation took them back to the times of the Exodus when God fed the people with manna. They immediately thought of the physical bread that the Lord had multiplied the day before, and they begged Him to always give them that bread that nourishes the body.
Poor human beings. How strong is our tendency to give priority to present and earthly needs. We forget the hunger of the spirit that languishes for lack of food. It was in this context that the Master's voice was heard uttering the words of today's verse.
Traveling the world and inviting people to give their hearts to Jesus, I have seen people from all walks of life: millionaires, poor, educated, illiterate, famous people, and anonymous citizens. All are hungry and running into the arms of Jesus.
Years later, I met them again happy and fulfilled. Only Jesus is able to fill the emptiness of the soul and restore the undone life of a poor sinner. This wonderful Christ is yours. He can be yours if you open the doors of your heart to Him and surrender, acknowledging that you hunger and thirst for justice.
Take Action
If, despite being a (nominal) Christian for a long time, you still feel an emptiness in your heart, perhaps you need to truly come to Christ. Only He can satisfy your "hunger" because He is the Bread of Life! Sing "The Bread of Life" (if possible, with your family).
