WHAT IS THE SYMBOLISM OF THE FURNITURE OF THE SANCTUARY?

“And Bezalel and Aholiab, and every gifted artisan in whom the Lord has put wisdom and understanding, to know how to do all manner of work for the service of the sanctuary, shall do according to all that the Lord has commanded.” Exodus 36: 1

God chose Bezalel and Aholiab, extraordinary craftsmen, because the construction of the sanctuary demanded perfection. Every piece of furniture and every utensil was important. In the courtyard, there was a bronze altar. That was where the sacrifices were offered and where the blood of the animals was poured out. The altar speaks to us about Christ and the sacrifices, too; the priest also symbolizes Christ. Everything that happened on the altar symbolized the sacrifice Jesus would make on the cross.

The bronze laver, which stood between the altar and the tabernacle, the table of showbread, the lampstand, the golden altar, all referred to Christ and His redemptive and intercessory work.

In the holy of holies, the ark stood out. Above it, stood the mercy seat, representing God's presence with His people. Inside the ark were the stone tablets with the eternal principles of His law. Although sin had broken these principles, they remained eternal and sacred. Obedience to His law does not save us, but with His sacrifice on the cross, Jesus made our redemption possible.

Just as the people met the priest in the sanctuary and he made intercession between the people and God, today Jesus is the way to reach the Father. Jesus is in the heavenly sanctuary, always at our disposal: Through His merits we are made righteous and pure before Him.
