“I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Philippians 4: 12,13
Why do you think Paul says he can do all things in Christ and yet mentions want, misery, and hunger? What does it mean to be able to do all things in Christ? Many believe that, according to this promise, there will be no difficulties or needs for the Christian. But God never promised you that if you give Him your life, your problems will disappear as if by magic. The Bible is emphatic in stating that Adam and Eve gave the title to this land to the enemy and today the devil feels so master of this world that in the desert he dared to say to Jesus, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me” (Matthew 4:9). How do you think he will not place in your way sharp rocks and piercing thorns?
J. B. Phillips' English version translates Paul's statement as follows: “In general and in particular I have learned the secret of facing either poverty or plenty. I am ready for anything through the strength of the one who lives within me.” The point of the message is that even if you go through challenging times, you will not be defeated. The real enemies we fight are not hunger, unemployment, or disease, but discouragement, pessimism, and defeat.
When you give your life to Christ, He does not remove the difficulties from your path. He does not remove the stones or the thorns. He does not offer you a day without night, or a summer without heat. Thus, to claim from God a soft and comfortable life is meaningless. Doubting His promises because things do not go your way is not consistent with believing in them.
Take Action
The blessing of giving your heart to God is that He enables you to face any situation. Neither the water will drown you nor the fire consume you. Your surrender to Christ will give you access to His infinite power. Do not wait any longer! Sing "I Can Do All Things" (if possible, with your family).
