"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." 1 John 1: 9
Confession originates from the soul. It generates with repentance, which is nothing more than a change of mentality that includes the awareness of having offended God. Repentance is a divine gift the Lord gives to the sinner hurt by the enemy’s darts. There are a lot of bleeding people in the world. The quicksand of evil suffocates them in the deep tunnel of damnation. Is there hope for the poor sinner?
John, in his first epistle, answers yes. The promise is categorical. It does not say "maybe I will be forgiven," or "who knows if I can be forgiven." It declares that Jesus "is faithful and just to forgive us." The condition is "if we confess our sins." It is first necessary to feel sorrow for sin; and at the same time, the vehement desire to turn away from it.
However, Jesus' promise is not limited to forgiveness. He is faithful and just to forgive sins and "cleanse us from all unrighteousness." Many desire forgiveness. They pray and beg for a new chance, but they continue to fall and return to their old way of life.
The truth is that the human problem is not simply falling, but bearing the source of sin, which the Bible calls "flesh" or "sinful nature." This is the root of all evil. Paul says, "Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like" (Galatians 5:19-21).
If humans did not live in "the flesh," they would not commit sinful acts or sins. All the evil deeds we try to avoid occur as a consequence of the sinful nature that we carry with us since sin entered the world. Is there a solution?
Yes. For God's work of redemption is not only to forgive our rebellious acts, but to "cleanse us from all unrighteousness."
