«Then I saw another angel flying in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach to those who dwell on the earth—to every nation, tribe, tongue, and people.» Revelation 14:6
The cosmic war that originated in Heaven and continues on Earth today is coming to an end. It is not a war with guns and tanks, but rather a conflict of ideas and loyalty. The central theme is divine sovereignty. Satan claims worship and obedience for himself. To this end, he pursues, pressures, and coerces. When this does not work, he deceives, seduces, and camouflages himself. He can even disguise himself as an angel of light, or as a religious institution. Innocent people can follow the teachings of a church without knowing that they are being deceived.
However, God always had a people who were obedient and attentive to biblical teachings. The word ‘angel’ in today’s verse—in Greek, angelos—means messenger. In the final days God will raise up a group of messengers to preach the last three warning messages to the world. The one in today’s text refers to the everlasting gospel. It is not a new gospel, for in God there is no variation. It refers to the biblical gospel and should be preached with a sense of urgency before the coming of Christ. That is why the angel flies.
Just as God gathers His redeemed with the everlasting gospel and seals them for protection on the last day, the devil also uses three false messages to confuse humans and seal them with the mark of the beast. “And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs coming out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. For they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty” (Rev. 16:13-14).
