"They sing the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying: ‘Great and marvelous are Your works, Lord God Almighty! Just and true are Your ways, O King of the saints! Who shall not fear You, O Lord, and glorify Your name? For You alone are holy. For all nations shall come and worship before You, for Your judgments have been manifested.’” Revelation 15: 3,4
Not long ago, I spoke with a person who believed they were lost because of their constant mistakes and unfulfilled promises. "If it were up to me, I would be lost, pastor," he told me in anguish. And it is true. If it depended on human capacity, not only would he be lost but all of us, in spite of the value we place on our good works, which to God are like filthy rags.
But in the book of Revelation, near the end and before the seven last plagues are poured out upon the unrepentant world, the song of the redeemed is recorded. John says they sing "the song of Moses, the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb." This is the same song that Moses and the Israelites sang in gratitude to God after the Lord saved them from drowning in the Red Sea. Now, at the end of time, God's people sing this hymn before their final deliverance. The focus of the hymn is the Lord Jesus Christ, which is why it is called the Song of the Lamb. And what do the lyrics say? That the final victory of the children of God will not be the fruit of their human efforts, but of the divine works of the Lamb, which he calls, as we see in today's text, "great and marvelous.”
Only Jesus is holy, and only His righteousness is perfect. There is nothing that the poor sinner, however repentant, is able to do to live a life of victory over evil; only trust that Jesus can do for him what He is unable to do in His own strength. Is not this promise encouraging?
