"And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: ‘Bring the tribe of Levi near, and present them before Aaron the priest, that they may serve him. And they shall attend to his needs and the needs of the whole congregation before the tabernacle of meeting, to do the work of the tabernacle.’" Numbers 3: 5-7
Rebellion comes at a price, and they had to learn that the result of turning away from the God of life is death. Then "Moses stood in the entrance of the camp, and said, ‘Whoever is on the Lord’s side—come to me!’ And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together to him" (Exodus 32:26).
The Levites were the only ones who did not bow their knees before the golden calf. That is why the Lord later chose them to serve Him and to be consecrated to the service of the tabernacle. Until that day, those who engaged in religious service were the firstborn of each family, but after that, it became the work of the Levites. “For they are wholly given to Me from among the children of Israel; I have taken them for Myself instead of all who open the womb, the firstborn of all the children of Israel" (Numbers 8:16).
However, the priesthood was restricted to Aaron's family. He and his sons were the only ones allowed to minister before the Lord. The other members of the tribe took care of the tabernacle, the furniture, and assisted the priests in their ministry, but they did not offer sacrifices or burn incense. Just as He did with the Levites who had the appointed honor of serving in the ministry of the tabernacle, God will reward His faithful children.
