“So Moses the servant of the Lord died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the Lord. And He buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth Peor; but no one knows his grave to this day.” Deuteronomy 34:5-6
As he dug up the ground of his memories, it seemed to Moses that he heard his mother's words telling him that he had been born with a divine purpose. As he recalled the past, he seemed to relive his first encounter with God in the desert. On that occasion, the Lord said to him, “Come now, therefore, and I will send you to Pharaoh that you may bring My people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt” (Exodus 3:10).
Moses went, and from that day on, his life became like a carpet sprinkled with pain, joy, struggles, and frustration. But he never despaired entirely. He loved his people, and sometimes interceded for them even, if necessary, at the cost of his own life. The Bible account says that “since then there has not arisen in Israel a prophet like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face” (Deuteronomy 34:10).
The time came for him to die. In this life, we all die eventually. And the best time to rest is when God, in His infinite mercy, allows us to rest Moses died on Mount Nebo. His dream had been to enter the Promised Land, leading God's people, but it was not fulfilled in the way he imagined. He dreamed of entering Canaan, distributing the land among the children of his people, and growing old sitting in a rocking chair, happily contemplating his people.
However, God had another dream for him, which was much better and bigger. Moses died but was immediately resurrected (see Jude 1:9; Matthew 17:1-3). When Israel entered the land, Moses, who might have been already resurrected, may have been able to behold his people, not from a rocking chair, shabby and aged, but from heaven, already enjoying eternal life.
God's dreams are always bigger and better than ours. Never forget this!
