«Now Jericho was securely shut up because of the children of Israel; none went out, and none came in. And the Lord said to Joshua: ‘See! I have given Jericho into your hand, its king, and the mighty men of valor.’» Joshua 6:1, 2
When British archaeologist Kathleen Kenyon excavated the site of ancient Jericho in the 1950s, she traversed numerous stacked strata, one on top of the other, and in the last of them she found the remains of what would have been a small village, supposedly the first city of Jericho. The most impressive thing about this finding was an immense wall that surrounded the entire village. It was five meters high and three meters wide and must have taken about ten thousand tons of building materials to build it.
From a human point of view, it would be impossible to conquer Jericho, but Jehovah told Joshua that He had delivered it into his hands (see verse at the beginning). God used a unique method for the conquest of Jericho. All the people had to do was march for seven days around the city and on the seventh day march seven times and shout. The walls came down and the city was conquered.
This episode proves that man’s dire need is God’s opportunity. Israel should have been used to it by now. From their departure from Egypt to their arrival at the borders of Jericho, they had experienced a succession of miracles. God kept His word once again.
The lesson we learn from the conquest of Jericho is that when we stand by God and follow His guidance, the walls of difficulty are miraculously broken down and victory is achieved. Nothing is impossible for God, and he can use any method to enforce his designs.
What wall is standing in front of you right now? What is the impossibility? Which doors are “locked, tightly locked”? In God’s name, put your regrets aside! Rise up and you will see the walls of the impossible come down! Jericho is yours!
