"Then all this assembly shall know that the Lord does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the Lord’s, and He will give you into our hands.” 1 Samuel 17:47
On the green hills surrounding the Valley of Elah, two warriors stood face to face. From a human perspective, that fight would be unfair. On one side, a giant almost three meters tall, was armed to the teeth. His breastplate weighed fifty-seven kilos, and the iron blade of his spear weighed seven kilograms. On the other side was a young man with only a sling and five stones. What chance did he have of winning? But things that are impossible for man are opportunities for the manifestation of God's power.
The giant Goliath had long challenged the Israelite soldiers, but no one dared to confront him. Then came David, the young shepherd, who was there just by chance. Seeing the insolence of Goliath despising the power of God and his armies, he stepped forward and said to him, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head from you. And this day I will give the carcasses of the camp of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel” (1 Samuel 17:45-46).
The outcome was surprising. David defeated the fearsome enemy. He made him kiss the dust of the earth. The giant fell, and today the story of David and Goliath is known in every corner of the world. But David's purpose was not to win and be famous, but that the whole Earth should know who Jehovah was and that His name should be exalted.
Blessed are those who live for the glory of God. The victories that the Lord grants us are not for our glory, but so that the world may know that God is in the midst of His people.
