"So David went on and became great, and the Lord God of hosts was with him." 2 Samuel 5:10
The young king continued his way to victory. He left Hebron for Jerusalem, which was inhabited by the Jebusites. Four hundred years ago, God had commanded Joshua to take all the land, but Jerusalem was still in the hands of the Jebusites who contemptuously claimed that David was so frail that he might lose to an army of the blind and lame. However, those who trust in the Lord are not discouraged by the threats and insults of the enemy. So David continued on his way fearlessly, trusting in God's power.
Although they were on their way to battle and the soldiers marched in a spirit of war, the landscape was peaceful. Goats came from the stubble with shepherds herding them. Tired ladies carrying some firewood on their shoulders for cooking. Nothing seemed extraordinary. But the victory was being prepared, and the Bible account states that David took the fortress of Zion and established the capital of Israel there.
The Jebusites disappeared. King David, barely thirty years old, began to be respected by the inhabitants of that land. In today's text, we read how he prospered, and the Lord was with him.
Blessed are the human beings who learn to walk with God. As long as He is with you, the hosts of your enemies will tremble. Even if their proud heart causes you to be threatened and mocked for your faith, you will march triumphantly because the Creator of the heavens and the earth will go with you.
Fear not. Your God is the God of David. He knows no defeat. Make that God your daily Companion and faithful Friend!
