“For who is God, except the Lord? And who is a rock, except our God? God is my strength and power, and He makes my way perfect. He makes my feet like the feet of deer, and sets me on my high places.” 2 Samuel 22:32-34
Near the end of his life, David looked back and saw the wondrous way the Lord guided his steps throughout his journey. While still young, he had defeated the lion and the bear; as a teenager, he faced the giant Goliath; as a young man, he overcame Saul persecuting him; as an adult, he defeated enemy countries; and as the old man, the rebellious Absalom. The Lord had always been with him despite the mistakes of his life.
That is why he worships God and asks, "Who is God, except the Lord?" The Creator had been his strong Rock in the hours when his strength failed him and discouragement seemed to take hold of his frail heart. He had carried him over the heights of the mountains, like hinds that graze without fear of the enemy.
He fell into sin; it is true, but what a wonderful God! He lifted him out of the pit of anguish and gave him another chance! He wept; it is true, but the merciful God wiped away his tears and took pity on his lamentations. God heard his sinful cry from his state of misery, believed in him despite his unfulfilled promises, and slowly carried him along the way, healing his wounds and transforming his nature.
That God is yours too. Look at the past without fear! Grasp God's promises! Never allow the clouds of the past to obscure your present. God is forgiving and transformative. He never left you. He is your rock. He is the one that girds you with strength, clears your path, gives you fawn feet, and holds you firm in the heights.
Take Action
Get to know God every day, every month, and every year. Over time, when you look back, you will discover that He was acting in your past (Even in events that you experienced when you ignored Him!). In this way, you will face the future with peace and determination. Sing "Who Is God beside the Lord?" (if possible, with your family).
