“And Your servant is in the midst of Your people whom You have chosen, a great people, too numerous to be numbered or counted. Therefore give to Your servant an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil. For who is able to judge this great people of Yours?” 1 Kings 3:8-9
A night dotted with stars and a smiling moon in the distance, they are celebrating the election of the new king of Israel. Solomon, who is fearful, was walking toward a lonely place in Gibeon. A new path where the sun had once stood while Joshua struggled. The road was lonely, but Solomon had already come into God's presence.
The voice of the Almighty was clear as the full moon of that night. “Ask! What shall I give you?” God asked him (1 Kings 3:5). It was an unimpeachable offer, an open promise, and a blank check. Solomon could ask for anything, and the Lord would give it to him—money, power, success, prosperity, anything. But what David's son did was ask Him for wisdom, as we see reflected in today's text.
The expression “a heart to judge” in the Hebrew language means wisdom and could be translated as prudence, intelligence, balance, good judgment, or common sense. Wisdom is the beginning of success. With wisdom, you can materialize any dream and undertake any undertaking. Solomon knew that without wisdom he would not be able to lead a people as great as Israel.
Blessed are human beings who are aware of their lack of wisdom. You are not everything, you do not know everything, and much less can you do everything. Only wisdom opens your eyes and understanding to ask for help and to extract the best in people, allowing them to achieve their own development.
Take Action
Seek God and ask Him for wisdom! You will see that it is a more valuable commodity than all the gold in the world. Sing "Solomon's Prayer" (if possible, with your family).
