«And Elisha prayed, and said, ‘Lord, I pray, open his eyes that he may see.’ Then the Lord opened the eyes of the young man, and he saw. And behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.» 2 Kings 6:17
The Syrians had come and laid siege to the city, under cover of the shadows of night. At daybreak, Elisha’s servant looked at the crowd of soldiers armed to the teeth and almost fainted. The first question he asked was, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?” (2 Kings 6:15). It is a very human question. It expresses incapacity, impotence, fragility, and resignation.
How many times in our pilgrimage through this land do enemy hosts arise that want to destroy us! They come camouflaged, dressed as shadows, hidden, and suddenly they show themselves as they really are: enemies ready for frontal attack, besieging the citadel of our soul. The instinctive question that arises is: What will we do? Sometimes, from a human point of view, it seems that there will be no way to deal with them.
Elisha, however, that day, in response to his servant’s question, prayed to God that he might see beyond the tangible. This is perhaps the greatest miracle the Lord needs to perform in our lives. Not that the enemy disappears, but that he opens our eyes to contemplate that the seemingly lost battle has already been won by Him. It is about seeing, with the eyes of faith, that God has power in the face of any adversity that comes our way.
Take Action
There are millions of invisible angels camped around you. Do not fear your enemies, do not run away, do not make excuses. If necessary, face them, for you are never alone. There are “horses and chariots” at your side. No one will be able to defeat you. Sing “Elisha’s Prayer” (if possible, with your family).
