Our God Is A Mighty Fortress

«God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.» Psalm 46:1 (ESV)

Have you ever built a castle on the sand? A castle is a fenced or fortified building that was common in Europe and the Middle East many years ago.

A castle was the residence of an important family: a lord or a prince, for example. It was different from a palace because it was fortified and soldiers stood around it, in the towers, ready to attack any invader. The first castles were made of clay and wood. Later they were built of stone.

Psalm 46 says that God is our castle or our fortress. This means that He is our greatest protection. Many religious people use Psalm 46 in their ceremonies.

Martin Luther was a German monk who became very famous in world history for his faithfulness to the Word of God. He composed a hymn that all Christians sing a lot, called A Mighty Fortress Is Our God, inspired by this psalm. People who sing this hymn feel protected and praise God that He is a source of power and salvation in times of distress and tribulation, driving Satan far away.

Let’s practice!

Sing the hymn A Mighty Fortress Is Our God with your mom or dad.
