«And do you seek great things for yourself? Do not seek them.» Jeremiah 45:5
The prophet Jeremiah had a secretary. He wrote down Jeremiah’s prophecies and transmitted them to the kings.
His name was Baruch. He was a very intelligent man, and his family was noble.
Before King Nebuchadnezzar invaded Jerusalem, Baruch took Jeremiah’s message to King Jehoiachin of Judah. “Look, king, because of disobedience, Babylon is going to destroy our nation!” The king was furious, burned the scroll Baruch wrote, and gave orders to arrest Baruch and Jeremiah, but God hid them from the eyes of the king and his servants.
God commanded Baruch to rewrite the same message on a new scroll. And he obeyed.
Baruch could have refused to do this work because it was risky. He could work on something else and be a famous man and make money. But God told Baruch to stop looking at himself and the rewards he thought he deserved. There is a reward in heaven for those who choose to serve God and don’t care about fame and money.
