«See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.» Zechariah 9:9
The Bible shares many stories in which a donkey was present. It was used a lot in biblical times and was very valuable.
Donkeys are still used today to plow the soil and carry loads.
The stronger and more beautiful horses were more expensive and only kings and people of wealth and honor rode them.
When Jesus made his triumphal entry into Jerusalem, coming as a king, he did not ride on an expensive horse that only kings used. He chose the foal of a donkey, a baby donkey. Jesus would not come to show off riches. Learning about His kingdom was more important than having lots of money or expensive horses.
Many years before this happened, the prophet Zechariah received this message from God and passed it on to the people to rejoice. They were suffering and were sometimes very discouraged. Then the prophet said: “Rejoice! The king will come riding on a donkey!” And many kept waiting!
Let’s practice!
Can you draw Jesus riding on a donkey?
