How To Be Happy

«Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.» Matthew 5:3

When Jesus began to do His work, the people were eager to be happy! They had become poor, they cried, they fought, they sometimes starved, they were persecuted and oppressed by the Romans. They had a dirty heart and did not treat others with kindness.

One day Jesus went up on a mountain and, seeing all those people wanting to hear Him, He felt sorry for them. He began to explain how they could be truly happy: “You will be happy when you say: I need God. The kingdom of God is yours! You will be happy if you cry in repentance for your sins. God will comfort you! You will be happy if you are meek. You will live in Heaven! You will be happy if you long for what is right, just as you long for food and water. God will do justice to you! You will be happy if you are kind. God will be kind to you! You will be happy if you are pure in heart. You will see God! You will be happy if you seek peace and don’t fight. God will call you His child! You will be happy if others treat you poorly, curse at you and persecute you because you love God. God has a great gift for you in Heaven!”

Sometimes the people didn’t understand everything Jesus said because they had a wrong view of what Jesus had come to do. They thought He would give everyone food, money and wealth, and that then everything would be fine. But this life wouldn’t last forever. Jesus wanted them to get ready for Heaven, which will last forever!
