«You shall have no other gods before me.» Exodus 20:3
It had been three months since the Hebrew people had left Egypt. They had spent many years in Egypt learning strange customs, such as worshiping idols, for example. God is the only Being that should be worshiped, because only He makes us increasingly better people. Worshiping idols makes us worse people.
God gave instructions for people to prepare themselves for a very special day! He would give them the Ten Commandments, which were to be obeyed by all mankind.
On the special day, no one, not even an animal, should touch Mount Sinai. There was lightning and thunder. That moment was very solemn; everyone was to be reverent and silent.
Then God’s voice was heard, and He gave the people His law. The first commandment forbids the worship of idols; the second tells us not to make carved images for worship; the third commands us not to use God’s name in vain; the fourth commandment orders us to keep the Sabbath day.
Let’s practice!
Ask your mom and dad to help you read the other six commandments.
