«But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them.» Acts 16:25
Paul and Silas were telling the story of Jesus and some people were enjoying it very much. But there were some men who didn’t like Paul and Silas and had them beaten severely and arrested.
Poor Paul and Silas! Blood dripped from their wounds, and they hurt very much. Their feet and hands were bound with handcuffs, but they were so happy to talk about Jesus! While the prisoners cursed and complained, Paul and Silas started singing in prison. The other prisoners and soldiers listened to this beautiful music and felt very peaceful.
Suddenly, an earthquake shook the prison and the doors opened. The guard was desperate! The prisoners would escape, and he would be severely punished as a result! But Paul said: “We’re not going to escape, guard! We are all here!”
The man was so grateful that he wanted to know more about the God of Paul and Silas. Do you know what he did? He took them both to his home, cleaned the wounds that he himself had given them and listened to them talk about Jesus. The guard accepted Jesus wholeheartedly and asked to be baptized!
Let’s practice!
If you were imprisoned like Paul and Silas, what song would you sing in prison?
