What Is Love?

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.» 1 Corinthians 13:4 (NIV)

What is love? Do you think love is liking someone who treats me well? What about when someone treats us poorly? Should we hate that person?

Jesus teaches us that love is much more than liking someone who has done us wrong. To love is to remember that all people were created by God and, just as He cares for them, respects them and treats them with affection, we should do the same.

Love makes us patient, kind, and takes away envy and jealousy. People who love don’t need to keep telling everyone that they have done something good.

Some people like to give clothes, gifts and food to people in need just to tell everyone: “Look how good I am!” But that’s not love, that’s showing off.

God is love! He is our greatest example. One day, when we are in Heaven, we will better understand the size of God’s love. But while we are here on earth, we can practice loving the way Jesus loves every day.

Let’s practice!

Repeat the verse: “Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up” (1 Corinthians 13:4).
