«The Lord bless you and keep you.» Numbers 6:24
When I was little, I learned each night to ask my parents: “The blessing, dad!” The blessing, mom!” And they would reply: “God bless you!”
I didn’t really understand what that meant, but it was nice to hear my parents say those words. It was as if I felt that God was with me.
In Israel’s time, God gave the priests special words that only they should say to the people. It went like this: “The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; […] the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.”
After the morning and evening sacrifices, the priest would raise his hands and say these good words to bless the people. And they would respond by saying “Amen!”
That was one of the most important moments in worship! And even today, those words are still used.
Let’s practice!
How about memorizing the priestly blessing?
