«Why does my lord thus pursue his servant? For what have I done, or what evil is in my hand?» 1 Samuel 26:18
King Saul was getting further and further away from God. Sometimes he got very angry. Being very jealous of David, he started to persecute him.
David fled and hid in a dark cave. Suddenly, someone entered the cave because he needed to go to the bathroom… Can you guess who it was? King Saul! David was with some soldiers and could have arrested and even killed Saul, but he didn’t. He just slowly cut off a piece of his robe and put it away, without Saul noticing.
When Saul was long gone, David shouted: “Look what I have in my hands, King Saul! I could have killed you, but I don’t hate you! Why do you persecute me?”
Saul repented for trying to harm David. But shortly after Saul was already persecuting David again. Still, whenever David had an opportunity to harm Saul, he did not. David was a good man and didn’t want to harm those who harmed him.
Let’s practice!
Has anyone ever done you any harm? What did you do? Ask Jesus to forgive those who hurt you, just like David did with Saul!
