«And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had done… Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it He rested from all His work which God had created and made. » Genesis 2: 2,3
After six days of creating majestic mountains, great oceans, twinkling stars, plants of all colors and shapes, animals of all kinds and the first human beings, God did something amazing on the seventh day: He rested. He wasn't tired, but He wanted to teach us something: the importance of enjoying His creation! God chose this day to stop and contemplate all that He had done. But the Sabbath is not just a day of rest. Every day was made good, but the Sabbath was made holy. God could sanctify anything, but He chose to sanctify time. The Sabbath, therefore, is a special day, for it is a holy day.
When we rest and keep the Sabbath holy, setting aside that day to become more involved with the things of God, making it a special day, He gifts us with blessings, for He blessed the seventh day, and made it holy.
In fact, the Sabbath is God's gift to us. It shows us that, in addition to work and daily activities, we need moments to rest, to be with those we love, and to connect more with God by reflecting on God's blessings in our lives.
Take Action
To honor this special day, how about creating a tradition of rest and gratitude? You can, for example, take a walk outside to admire nature, read stories from the Bible, draw or write about the things God created and that you love the most, or prepare a special meal to share with your family. This day can be an opportunity for you to connect with God and the people you love, remembering the wonders He has created for us.
