«Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said: “Who is this who darkens counsel by words without knowledge? Now prepare yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer Me. “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements?» Job 38:1-5
After much suffering and many questions, there comes a moment in Job’s story, specifically in chapter 38, where God finally answers him. And what an answer, huh! It was not a simple explanation, but rather a powerful revelation of God’s greatness, wisdom, and sovereignty over all creation.
God begins to speak to Job with questions that show how limited human understanding is in the face of the vastness of the universe. “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?” This and similar questions remind us that there are many things beyond our comprehension. God describes the creation of the world, the wonders of nature, and the mysteries of the universe to Job and his readers, demonstrating His infinite wisdom and power.
God’s response to Job is an invitation to trust the One who rules the universe with wisdom and love. Even when we do not understand the “why” of our circumstances, we can rest assured that God is in control and has a plan for each of us. If He can control the entire universe, why could He not control your life and mine as well?
Take Action
To reflect on God’s answer and His sovereignty, try spending some time outdoors, observing nature. Think about the questions God asked Job and how they apply to your own life. What aspects of the world around you show God’s greatness? Then, in a time of prayer, talk to God about your own questions and trust that He is listening and has a plan for you, even if you do not see all the answers right now.
